The AHS International Igor I. Sikorsky Hover Challenge

AHS International — The Vertical Flight Technical Society, which has more than 6,000 members in 37 countries, including the world’s leading vertical flight manufacturers, is partnering with Sikorsky for this challenge in order to inspire innovative thinkers with a incredibly difficult challenge.

Hover a heavier-than-air flying machine for 24 hours, while still demonstrating other typical helicopter attributes, in full accordance with the detailed rules that will be announced on this webpage (www.vtol.org/challenge).

The challenge that will focus on the following key characteristics:

  • Hover for 24 hours
  • Carry 80 kg payload
  • Unoccupied

 

Current FAI world record holder (FAI – Fédération Aéronautique Internationale) – Boeing A160T Hummingbird

In May 2008, the A160T successfully completed all 14 phase I flight test demonstrations, including: flight at a maximum speed of 263km/h (142kt), an eight-hour flight carrying a 450kg (1,000lb) payload, an 18.7-hour endurance flight with a 136kg (300lb) payload and a high-altitude hover-out-of-ground effect (HOGE) demonstration at 4,572m (15,000ft) and 6,000m (20,000ft).
